Last night I finished the last scene my book , “Enduring Service.” It is the third book in my Colony series of humorous paranormal romances. Book #2, “United Service”, just came back from my line editor this past weekend. So I’ll work on that while I put “Enduring Service” aside and give my mind some time to distance itself from my writing. It was good timing that I found this article of the 7 deadly sins of self-editing. http://www.writersdigest.com/online-editor/the-7-deadly-sins-of-self-editing?et_mid=607208&rid=234842913 I do agree with the 7 sins and thought I’d share it with my writing buddies. 🙂 Regina Morris

Every writing class I’ve taken has emphasized the importance of “the hook” in your first chapter. The instructors always say that the first chapter is the most important one. Next, it’s the first 25-50 pages that need to be polished. Why? Because agents stop reading after about 10 seconds of glancing at your work. I can’t blame them. They get so many manuscripts each day. It’s like an employer looking at a resume. The first few seconds are crucial if you want the job. You can flower up your writing, you can send a beautiful query letter … but if the first chapter isn’t as polished and as professional looking as you can make it, it won’t cut in this fast-paced publishing world. I found this article about the top 7 reasons agents stop reading your first chapter and thought I’d share it here on my blog. I’m happy to report that my books are not falling into these traps. http://www.writersdigest.com/editor-blogs/guide-to-literary-agents/7-reasons-agents-stop-reading-your-first-chapter

I try so hard to accomplish three mini-goals each day that will progress my writing career. I do this every day. Sometimes what I do is small, and at times it can take me hours to just do one of the three items on my list. For example, today I completed the LSI documents so they can be faxed tomorrow. An LSI account will get me listed on the Ingram’s list so people can buy my paperback at BN. Secondly, I edited the first 3500 words of my novel, “Enduring Service”, so that I could enter it into a writing contest. Lastly, I write a synopsis for that book. Tomorrow will be an easier day. I’m going to fax and mail the paperwork (entry for for “Enduring Service” for WLT contest). That will be 2 of my 3 for the day. I will also call send emails to my friends in my neighborhood who are not on Facebook that my book is available. Some days are harder than others, but it’s all worthwhile! 🙂 Regina Morris

Whew! The print version of my book, Eternal Service, has been ordered. I did this through my CreateSpace account. CreateSpace is Amazon’s company for print books. You can’t tell, but I’m grinning from ear-to-ear! The book was printed and shipped already. Should be here (maybe) by Friday. I saw a digital copy of it online and it looked good, but the real test will be when I have it in hand and can really check it over. If all goes well, this means I can approve the proof on CreateSpace and put my book on the Amazon store. I do have to create my author account on Amazon, but I already have the Kindle version of the book and I’m ready to pull the switch and make it available. This is all happening so fast! I also plan on creating an account on LSI (think CreateSpace but on a bigger scale). LSI will have my book listed on Ingrams and will allow stores like BN and Book People to order print copies.
I officially registered for the copyright of my first book, “Eternal Service”, today! It was pretty easy to do. I went to www.copyright.gov and watched the power point video on how to register a new title as me being the single author contributing, and it was done in under 10 minutes. Of course, getting a copyright is not required. The simple fact that you have published your books (or parts) onto your website, printed them out, and have records going back for a while that you have been working on the book … usually that is enough, except for a court of law. I’m not expecting to need my official copyright, but it was only $35. I have done the “poor man’s copyright” and snail mailed myself a copy of all three of written books. I did that a while ago. But, for just $35, it is nice to have peace of mind that my book is registered to me. 🙂 Regina

As I sat at work today counting down the hours until I get to go home, my mind filled with all the other stuff in my life that I could be doing if not out earning a living. And a thought crossed my mind. If I could have either a million dollars or 6 more hours magically added to my day, which would I choose? I’ve never been one to be drawn to money, or at least I hope I come off looking like that. Don’t get me wrong, money is very important. Without it my life would be much harder as I try to feed and clothe my kids, plus a whole lot of other terrible stuff. So my initial gut reaction said to take the time, not the money. I then thought about the “magically added to my day” part. Is that just 6 lonely hours where no one but me exists in the world? Of course I wouldn’t want to work those hours and certainly wouldn’t miss if my boss went missing during my extra hours of gifted bliss. But it did give me pause. For example, I just moved my dear mother-in-law into a retirement home this month. She is now (thankfully) closer to me. She is a VERY lonely woman. If she had taken the 6 extra hours deal she would just have 6 more hours of being lonely. Maybe she’d nap? I’m not really sure. Perhaps the extra 6 hours would be good in the beginning of my life, but not so good as I age. Of course, right now if I had 6 more hours my house would be spotless and I’d spend more time writing my books. That does sound appealing. And then a thought occurred to me. I think I’d have to choose the million dollars and look greedy for once. A million dollars would mean I wouldn’t have to work. That would give me back my 8 hour workday (plus drive time) which would be almost 9 hours a day back when I need it the most. Money. Who would have thought that would be the better option. :-\

Meetings & Classes

What an educational weekend I had! It started with a class from the Writers’ League of Texas on early Saturday morning. The class was about PR and being your own publicist for your book. Let’s just say I have a lot of connections to make and press reviews and such to write. I did make two friends in the class and, hopefully, now have some new critique and interview partners in the making. The importance of having a book trailer was stressed during the class. I knew it was coming. I just am not the best when it comes to video. So many options to choose from really. Do you want live actors? Do you just want still shots? Do you want voice over and have it sync with the images of the video? What about royalty free music and pictures? yadda yadda yadda So after the WLT class I went to animoto.com and I created my video. It was a great video, but that led me to take a good look at my cover art for my book. My cover art needed tweaking! So I was off on Sunday to take an online class on PhotoShop. I’ve never done PhotoShop before. Never needed to do it. I own the program, but it just sits in my pile of CDs gathering dust. So I dusted it off. After hours of learning PhotoShop I then updated the cover art. I now LOVE the cover of my first book. It went from an okay cover to one that really pops. So I put this all together this weekend and took a look at the time element that was involved. The WLT class was at 9am on Saturday morning. My video was completed at midnight Sunday night. Two solid days of my time. I only wrote about 500 words in novel #2. I managed to get some laundry done, but not much more. But, on the bright side, I own the video. I own the cover art. I did it exactly the way I wanted it and it was very little cost to me financially. If I had paid someone for both the cover art and video it would have been a lot of money. Time. Money. It’s always the tradeoff, isn’t it? So now I have a video and have to figure out how to put it on my YouTube account and onto my website. I also want to update my website with the new cover art for my book. I don’t do YouTube, so that is something else I will figure out how to do today while I try to write 1500 words in novel #2 to make up for not writing so much over the weekend.
